BSB consultation on litigation authorisation application fees

Barristers have the opportunity to have their say on the cost of applying to the Bar Standards Board (BSB) for authorisation to conduct litigation.

From January 2014, self-employed barristers will be able to apply to conduct litigation.

A one-off fee of £90 is proposed to cover the cost of processing the application.

Allowing self-employed barristers to apply to conduct litigation is just one of the practising restrictions that have been lifted as part of the new Code of Conduct which is enforceable from January 6 2014. The BSB plans to launch the new litigation authorisation regime from 22 January.

The revised Code now forms Part Two of the new BSB 'Handbook', which brings together all the BSB's regulations and guidance for barristers into one publication. More information on the Handbook is available from www.barstandardsboard.org.uk/handbook

To take part in the consultation visit our website and respond before 15 January 2014.

Notes to editors

The majority of the costs associated with authorisation arise from staff time spent assessing and processing applications, as well as following up records and updating.
