Real appetite for change at the Bar as BSB sees rush of prospective entities in its first week of accepting applications

13 January 2015

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) heard from as many as 30 applicants for prospective BSB-regulated entities within just five days of the barristers' regulator opening its doors to applications. Between business hours on Monday 5 and Friday 9 January dozens of applicants registered an interest in setting up a BSB-regulated entity.

Director of Supervision for the Bar Standards Board, Oliver Hanmer said: "That we've heard from 30 applicants in just five days shows there is a real appetite among many at the Bar for doing things differently. Applications are considered on a first come, first served basis, so I'd advise barristers considering setting up a BSB-regulated entity to get in touch with us as soon as possible. Ultimately, it's our job as the barristers' regulator to help those who want to adopt new advocacy-focussed business models, which we think will broaden client choice."

The majority of applicants were prospective "single person entities", five were for entities of two to five people, and one was for an entity of 6 to 15. Almost half were from the Greater London region, around a third from either Birmingham, Manchester, or Nottingham, and the rest were spread across England.
