New demographic statistics published

27 April 2015

The barristers' regulator, the Bar Standards Board (BSB), has today published a new set of statistical data on the demographics of the Bar. The BSB hopes the new resource will help those who want to find out more about the profession.

The new dataset provides useful information about:

  • Practising barristers;
  • Those who qualify as a barrister ("Called to the Bar");
  • Those who obtain the rank of Queen's Counsel (QC);
  • Applicants to and enrolments on the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), as well as the number of students who successfully complete the course; and
  • The number of pupils (including First and Second Six).

During the past year the BSB has introduced new reporting mechanisms and quality assurance structures for managing and analysing information about barristers and the Bar. As a result, some numbers presented in the new datasets may vary from past publications.
