Blog: Monthly message from our Chair Sir Andrew Burns KCMG

Just a quick update from me this month. Due mainly to an early Easter this year, it feels to me as if our January, February and March Board meetings fall in particularly rapid succession.

Furthermore, we are dealing with a number of weighty and significant matters at the moment. Not least of these, is the work we are doing to finalise our new Strategic Plan for 2016-19. We consulted on a draft version earlier in the year, and in a few weeks' time, we are due to publish the final version. Watch this space!

Alongside the new Strategic Plan, we are also working to finalise our very first Risk Outlook. The Risk Outlook identifies important trends and developments in the way in which legal services are being delivered and consumed. It helps us identify the biggest risks to our regulatory objectives, and therefore where we need to focus most of our regulatory attention in the period ahead. You should be aware that taking a risk-based approach to regulation is an essential element of our new strategic approach.

We will be holding an event in London on April 12, to launch our new Strategic Plan and our Risk Outlook. This will further help us to explain our new approach. We intend to publish a report of the launch event afterwards, so will disseminate this to you via a future edition of Regulatory Update.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to a new consultation which we have recently published. This contains our draft Professional Statement threshold standard and competences. These set out, in detail, the abilities and standards that all barristers will be expected to have demonstrated in order to be issued with a full practising certificate. They have been designed to be an essential resource for all barristers, and for those designing training.

Please do take a look and let us have your thoughts on what we have set out. This consultation closes on 5 June. Thank you.
